Scientists have been playing with statistics for generations, trying to get them to say what they want to hear, and hide ‘noise’. Experimental design design can do so much more to make results clear and useable. I like the description Dan had of journals that pre-arrange publication based on design and proposal. I think that’s where the journal reviewers can really make an impact on their fields. If more journals did that, the quality of studies might improve, even if the quantity tapered off.
